"Destination"

An Integrated Art Proposal at Lilydale station, Maroondah Highway, Australia. The commissioned public art installation:”Destination”, is a screen-based work, located at the top of the zinc-clad lift tower of Lilydale station, which acts as a civic marker within the precinct. The artwork is designed for the 4 digital screens on top of the lift tower of the station.  The 4 digital screens are highly visible from all around. The artwork contributes to wayfinding and placemaking, clearly designating the station as a destination and key public building within its urban setting.

The 4 LED screens are optically transformed into a sculptural element. The video shown on the 4 Led screens creates the illusion of an internally lit frosted glass façade on top of the Lilydale tower. By using the visual quality of frosted glass, an illusion of a 3-dimensional space, is created, that reveals light from within the tower onto the different “glass panels” of the facade. Optically a light shines from within and moves over all sides of the glass panels. The moving light reveals two shadow-lines, resembling the pointers of a shadow clock. The shadow lines match the position of an actual time clock and refer to a shadow clock that can be used to tell time through the moving sunlight. The partly lit up frosted light circles and the shadows parts, resemble the lunar or moon phases.

The light of the facade attracts insects, that normally use the light of the sun and the moon to navigate. These insects can be as well on the outside of the glass façade as on the inside. They can create shadows and patterns onto the glass façade and tell a story about traveling, meeting and relationships.

The work makes a reference to, finding your destination on a literal base (traveling, way finding) and a more universal way (finding your destination in life). The work symbolizes the ever-ongoing search for destination, a search for guidance and purpose.
